Where to turn for help? Former sex offenders and their families, shunned by most other agencies and consultants, need guidance to deal with hard-to-understand laws, vague compliance information and hostile, non-responsive law enforcement.
The sheer number of issues, fears, agencies, attorneys, and unknowns are enough to overwhelm defendants, registrants and their families. More questions seem to pop up every day and nobody seems able to confidently answer them.
With help from PCR Consultants and the local community education and support of Families Affirming Community Safety, these new challenges can be met with dignity and even hope. For a free initial consultation, contact PCR Consultants,

Are there resources for ex-offenders to find housing?

Question…
When does an “ex” offenders punishment for the crime ever end if they are required to register for the rest of life?

Greg,
The Nebraska and the U.S. Constitutions say that any offender’s punishment ends when she/he has served out the sentence pronounced by the court. The Ohio Supreme Court has found that the Adam Walsh Act (the basis of Nebraska’s law) violates the Constitution because it is punitive, and cannot be applied retroactively. It is only a matter of time before Nebraska’s law fails in the same way. But it will take time. Help us change public attitudes by supporting the Nebraska 285 Campaign.

Look at our “Get Help” page. There are some resources in Lincoln and Omaha. According to the statistics on offender reoffense rates, people who live hear low-risk former sex offenders are SAFER than people who live near, oh, say, people who drink and drive. Help us provide this information to people who own rental property by supporting the Nebraska 285 Campaign.

I am an ex-felon and recovering alcoholic and meth addict (6 years). I just recently graduated from college with a Bachelors Degree in Social Work. I am trying to find a job working with people transitioning out of prison back into society. I want to help those people who are going through what I went through. Does anyone know of any agencies that do this type of work and are looking for someone who understands the population from personal experience with four years human services work experience as well?

I was just released from prison and placed on parole and just found out that I will be on parole for the rest of my life. I have heard rumors that lifetime supervision was found illegal in the Nebraska supreme court is that correct or just someones wishful thinking?
Editors Response: The Nebraska Supreme Court ruled that lifetime parole was punishment. As such, it must be ordered by a judge. If the judge did not specifically order lifetime parole, then yes, it is illegal. However, if the judge ordered lifetime parole, then your only choice is to get an attorney and try to challenge it, but that may be next to impossible at this time.
If the judge ordered lifetime parole, your best bet right now is to do parole for the next 4 or 5 years, and make efforts to help change the legislative climate. Only by changing the legislative climate can we hope to get true change for the future. Otherwise, you can try a challenge on 8th Amendment for lifetime parole, but the real time to do that would have been at time of conviction.
Always consult an attorney to be 100% sure.
